A maid of the Haunted Mansion

"Drag your wretched bodies to the dead center of the room."
—A maid

The Haunted Mansion is staffed by maids and other house servants. Generally, the maids do not smile, and they commonly refer to mortal guests as "bodies."

History[]

Background[]

The maids are servants in the Haunted Mansion. It is generally kept ambiguous whether they are alive or undead. They dress in striped green/black dresses and mobcaps decorated with (fabric) bats. According to an unconfirmed Disney Parks story, all maids name the fabric bats which they wear on their heads.

Development History[]

An unused character concept by Marc Davis which went through a considerable number of development stages was that of a ghost maid. This maid however was much more cartoony and resembled a stereotypical "bed-sheet" ghost.

Appearances[]

The Haunted Mansion[]

The maids are played by Cast Members who work at the attraction.

Phantom Manor[]

The servants appear similarly in this attraction as to their appearance in the Haunted Mansion. What is notably is the maid Anna Jones who was the mistress of the manor's owner Henry Ravenswood before her demise, being buried in Thunder Mesa's Boot Hill.

Other Appearances[]

Ghost Gallery[]

In the unofficial Ghost Gallery storyline which was created by cast-members who worked at Walt Disney World's Haunted Mansion, the ghost haunting the floating candelabra is identified as having been one of the mansion's maids who was named Prudence.

The Haunted Mansion (2003 Film)[]

In the 2003 film, a ghostly maid named Emma haunted Gracey Manor, along with her husband Ezra, the footman.

SLG Comics[]

In Mystery of the Manse, a maid named Michelle came back to Gracey Manor after the Master's death to search for his gold and after finding it, decided to keep living in the Mansion, seeing the spirits as watchdogs and keeping Gracey's remains hanging as a warning to trespassers, while still keeping the house in order. As she grew older, she hired additional help, and left the Gracey fortune to another young woman that would look after the house and the Maid tradition continued into the 21st century.

In The Interview and it's following stories, a young woman named Sarah comes to the Mansion to apply for a Maid position only to discover in her rush to get to the interview with the current head maid that she crashed into a tree and her spirit is the one that arrived. After being revived by an ambulance crew, she becomes interested in becoming the Mansion's 1000th ghost, though is talked out of it by the Caretaker when returning to the Mansion. However, her boyfriend Steve, concerned for her wellbeing, ends up following her to the Mansion and ends up being scared to death, resulting in the Mansion hitting full occupancy and disappearing into the netherworld leaving Sarah, the Caretaker, and the Head Maid behind. The Misery of the Manse ends on a cliffhanger with Sarah jumping into the vortex to try and get Steve back and possibly undo this curse on the Mansion.

Disney Crossy Road[]

One of the maids is a playable character in this mobile-game's Haunted Mansion stages.

Disney Story Beyond[]

A Maid named Z.J. is a central character in the campaign and is one of the contributors to the Ghost Registry, a tome kept by the Mansion's mortal staff for generations chronicling the tales of the Mansion's residents.

Trivia[]

  • In 2020, the wardrobe of the servants was altered to include face-masks and visors. This was due to the highly infectious Covid19 pandemic which hit Florida particularly hard (although apparently not hard enough for them to shut down their theme-parks).
